In the Senate, Democrats have missed a golden opportunity to take advantage of Republicans defending twice as many seats and Democrats had twice as much cash... If Trump wins after all, he and Republicans will be in a stronger position than they were before the election. Conversely, even if Trump should not prevail, Republicans will have achieved a great deal. In Congress, they will have accomplished their goals: holding the Senate and advancing in the House. Even if they are found to have lost the presidency, they have inherited a potent populist blueprint for success.

During an interview on MSNBC Wednesday, McCaskill said that the Republican Party has picked up voters while Democrats focus on social issues. "Whether you are talking guns or ... abortion ... or gay marriage and rights for 'transsexuals' and other people who we as a party 'look after' and make sure they are treated fairly. As we circled the issues, we left some voters behind and Republicans dove in with a vengeance and grabbed those voters," she said.

Republicans have deemed the Democratic-led bill — which was unveiled the week after the president was diagnosed with COVID-19 — a publicity stunt ahead of Election Day, though Pelosi argued the legislation is not intended to be a direct swing at President Trump.

And in a sign of how much the president has oscillated on the issue, Trump told conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh in an interview later Friday afternoon that he wanted a larger package that either Democrats or Republicans have offered, representing a break with what his own White House is now offering Capitol Hill. “I would like to see a bigger stimulus package, frankly, than either the Democrats or the Republicans are offering. I’m going in the exact opposite now. OK?” Trump said.

First, Republicans were called “Deplorables.” Now, the Speaker of the House says we are “Enemies of the state.” This disgusting language is a danger to our country and our democracy.

—Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas) // 24 Aug. 2020 // 6:57 PM

Disgusting: Nancy Pelosi just called Republicans "domestic enemies.” I was shot because of this kind of unhinged rhetoric. Where’s the media outrage?

“House Democrats have demonstrated that we are committed to keeping the government open by passing 10 of the 12 annual appropriations bills, a stark contrast with Senate Republicans, who have not even begun their appropriations process,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.)... The idea of linking the CR and coronavirus aid has been circulating around Capitol Hill, particularly among Republicans, for weeks... But Republicans have discussed it as they’ve worked to finalize a second GOP-only coronavirus bill.

"Democratic leadership is blaming Republicans on FISA, but Speaker Pelosi blocked pro civil-liberties amendments and stymied reforms over the last year, including yesterday. That's why she doesn't have the votes — she hasn't earned them," [Daniel Schuman] said. "This may surprise some, but Pelosi is a surveillance hawk and has long sacrificed civil liberties on the altar of national security.”

—Jordain Carney and Chris Mills Rodrigo, "House cancels planned Thursday vote on FISA," 28 May 2020 {9:49 AM EST} *

Democrats are racing to broaden their path to the Senate majority in November, while Republicans are spending heavily in an effort to hold their control over the chamber... With the exception of Alabama, Republicans have few pickup opportunities in 2020. The party is defending incumbents in 23 seats, compared with only a dozen for Democrats.
